Job Description:

  • To decide on the proper course of investigation, the candidate will be in charge of receiving and assessing complaints against administrative fairness and disclosures of wrongdoing.
  • For given matters, the candidate will be in charge of creating and carrying out investigative strategies and terms of reference.
  • Throughout the investigation, the applicant will be in charge of interacting and speaking with both public officials and members of the public.
  • In order to determine applicable legal requirements as well as pertinent concepts, standards, and tests pertaining to assigned investigations, the applicant will be in charge of doing research.
  • The candidate will be in charge of conducting formal interviews, including those conducted under oath where necessary, and requesting that pertinent records be produced by the competent authorities.
  • The candidate will be in charge of organizing and evaluating substantial amounts of textual evidence in order to assess its applicability to investigative issues.
  • The candidate will be in charge of assessing the evidence, weighing it, and drawing logical conclusions about the facts using the balance of probabilities method.
  • When determining whether to start, stop, or finish inquiries into administrative injustice by public authorities, the candidate must use independent judgment.
  • In order to create administratively fair, reasonable, principled, and workable solutions and remedies that promote systemic change and long-term impact, the applicant will be in charge of interacting with authorities and discussing with them.
  • The candidate will be in charge of giving authorities and complainants clear, succinct, thorough, educational, and convincing justifications for investigative findings.

  • In order to educate stakeholder groups about the Ombudsperson’s duty, administrative fairness, PIDA, and other subjects pertaining to the office’s mandate, the candidate will be in charge of creating and presenting seminars and presentations.
  • The candidate will be in charge of establishing and preserving cooperative, professional connections with authorities, coworkers, other Ombudsman offices, and independent legislative agencies.
  • The candidate will be in charge of taking part in community engagement initiatives and Ombudsperson visits.

Requirements for Ombudsperson Officer Jobs in Canada:

  • A university degree in a related field, such as journalism, public administration, social sciences, Indigenous social work, Indigenous business and public administration law, or a dual Juris Doctor/Indigenous law degree, is required.
  • The applicant must have used conflict resolution techniques and effectively communicated with people in crisis situations within the last five years.
  • The candidate must have at least two (2) years of investigative experience using at least five (5) of the following skills: analyzing fact patterns; obtaining information and evidence from a variety of sources and techniques; testing and corroborating information and evidence; assessing information and evidence in the context of relevant laws and policies; creating workable and moral solutions to complex problems; convincing parties to take a course of action; making formal decisions with written justifications; and handling a large number of complex cases.
  • In addition to formal training and post-secondary education in a comparable subject, the candidate will be taken into consideration if they have an equivalent combination of relevant investigation, conflict settlement, writing, and complaint resolution experience.
  • Candidates who identify as First Nations, Métis, Inuit and/or Indigenous, Black or racialized, 2SLGBTQIA+, persons with varied gender identities or expressions, and/or those with disabilities may be given preference.
  • Candidates with prior expertise serving the public with mental health issues, physical or cognitive impairments, and/or personal crises may be given preference.
  • Candidates with training or expertise in cultural safety and/or trauma-informed techniques may be given preference.
  • Candidates with prior experience fostering relationships and offering client services to individuals with a variety of lived experiences, such as members of First Nations, Métis, Inuit, and/or urban Indigenous communities, people with disabilities, and people of diverse sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression (2SLGBTQIA+) may be given preference.
  • Candidates with prior experience handling complaints about government services or programs may be given preference.
